Kuudere, a part of the Big -dere, is a term created by anime fans for a certain trope of characters. These characters are usually cool and calm, oozing with confidence. However, they are opposites!

The word comes from “kuuru”, which is borrowed from the English word “cool”. And, “dere” is a Japanese term for sweet. So, today, we thought that it would be a good idea to list the 10 best Ice Queens aka Kuudere in anime!

10) Boa Hancock- One Piece:

As the leader of the Kuja Pirates and a former Warlord of the Sea, Boa Hancock is one of the most respected pirates in One Piece with a bounty of 1,659,000,000 Berries.

Boa hates men and has even banned them from entering her island. Trespassing may even lead to prison and in the worst case, death.

She also ate the Devil Fruit “Mero Mero no Mi” which allows her to turn anybody who lusts for her into stone. Considering this, she is a true hater of men.

However, things changed after Luffy’s appearance. Boa was unable to turn the Straw Hat Captain into stone as he did not lust for her. Later, Luffy helped her too, making Boa fall in love with him.

A big reason for this is her history with men as she was forced into slavery by the Celestial Gods. However, Luffy’s pure mind won her heart as he could see Boa for the person she is, and not just her outstanding looks.

9) Golden Darkness- To Love Ru:

Also known as Koniji no Yami, Golden Darkness is a cold assassin, known for her extreme professionalism. She is stoic and prefers to be alone and focuses on her missions only. Not once has she shown a single emotion.

As she spends more time on the planet, Darkness develops a crush on Rito. She even has soft moments where she compliments Rito and acts sweet and kind towards him.

8) Mikasa Ackerman- Attack On Titan:

While she’s more of a Yandere, Mikasa’s cool-headed personality makes her a suitable character to be called a Kuudere.

Her cool and isolating nature is because of her childhood trauma from the time she was kidnapped. Gladly, Eren came to her rescue, and the two somehow managed to escape.

6) Tachibana Kanade — Angel Beats

As the president of the afterlife school’s Student Council, Tachibana solves people’s problems and moves on. Her character design combined with that expressionless face barely makes her seem human!

Most characters think that she doesn’t even have a conscious mind. However, Tachibana starts to slowly open up to Yuzuru Otonashi. Later, they develop romantic feelings and discover the connection they had when they were still alive.

5) Hitagi Senjougahara from Bakemonogatari:

Referring to herself as a Tsundere, Hitagi is a true Kuudere in every sense. She has a sharp tongue and carries a straight face at all times. This had made it near impossible for anybody to talk to her.

However, she is a sincere and nice person who has to put up this front to protect herself. This is because of the traumatic experiences she faced during her family’s downfall. As the anime progresses, Hitagi opens up to Araragi, and eventually overcomes all of her trauma to become a cheerful girl.

4) Saber from Fate/Stay Night:

Raised to be King, Saber is a strong, independent woman who only focuses on getting the Holy Grail while following the rules of Chivalry. Saber is a just and bold woman.

However, this is far from the truth as Homura, much like all the other characters on the list, is a sincere person.

After witnessing the deaths of her best friend Madoka numerous times, she decides that she has had enough and abandons her old personality.

At the end of her story, Homura’s emotions get so confusing that by the time she finally gains the power to save her friends she recreates the ideal world for her, and becomes its version of the devil.

This leaves her imprisoned in a constant war with the one she loves most.

2) Violet Evergarden From Violet Evergarden:

Violet, a former soldier, had been treated as a weapon all her life. She was raised with no feelings, and her only objective is to follow whatever her seniors say.

For Violet, this was confusing, as she didn’t even understand what love meant. This starts her journey of self-discovery as Violet starts to understand her emotions slowly.

1) Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh:

Sakaki is tall and beautiful, and anything she does looks super cool. Every girl in her grade is either envious of her or affectionate towards her, simply because of how elegant she is.

The truth is, she is obsessed with anything cute, especially cats. By the way, this obsession is absolutely ridiculous, even for a cat person.
